The Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner (OHIC) was established by legislation in 2004 to broaden the accountability of health insurers operating in the state of Rhode Island. Under this legislation, the Office is dedicated to: protecting consumers, encouraging fair treatment of medical service providers, ensuring solvency of health insurers, improving the health care system's quality, accessibility and affordability.
This program, is a federal and state funded program that pays for medical and health related services for eligible Rhode Islanders. RIte Care, covers families receiving cash assistance through the Family Independence Program and income eligible children, parents, and pregnant women without health insurance.
